Why do we breed when we cant handle it?

Resource based soceity...Or Resource management in the world...

These words kept doing rounds in my thoughts...As an Engineer, I can appreciate how important it is for organizations to keep their business going. Extrapolating this thought, would be it worth for our government to have a vision to manage Population control, based on the Operations Research fundamentals. How plausible is to have a government operate on a thought process primarily used in businesses?

The Problem Statement is intuitive. Population today in our country is the root cause for a number of serious issues like poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, infrastructure planning and growth, raising costs for education/food/water and shelter etc.

As a democracy, there is so much need to educate people on population control. We really dont need to breed if we have to bring in lives onto this planet, only to suffer.

It might be useful to plan population growth in a amicable fashion rather than insensibly breeding. We need to evaluate our resources and plan our growth accordingly. I know I am asking for trouble from our elder generation and many prospective parents. Feelers would petition for a callback for these statements. But hear it out with an open mind and think lateral.

Its time to eradicate legacy Human Development Lifecycle Process following a manifestation of a Phased (Child)Product program, that need to pass the Conformance tests at various phases with a Acemedic certificate, Employment offer letter, Marriage Certificate, a child birth Certificate and finally a unit linked Pension plan. Isnt it a social stigma which people are conditioned to from times immemorial?

Somehow there is a need to de-couple aspects such as love, marriage, love making or even feeding your instincts from a serious matter such as population control. As human we have our freedom to experience some of the best journeys life has to offer like love, marriage, various expressions of love. However, we need to demonstrate a sense of responsibility towards a larger cause i.e. Health of our Society.

The idea is to control population and not curb people from having children. Its okay to have one or a maximum of two children. Look at the state in villages where we see a couple having 8 to 10 kids, when the family is short of feeding even two people.
How are we reaching out to such people to explain the fulcrum of the issue?

It should be a strategic approach.

Strategy for rural areas: We must get to a state where we can educate people not to have more 1 or 2 kids. Its not realistic for us to imagine that only education will get us to where we want to be. We will need Governance and Laws to help us get there.

Strategy for urban areas: We could encourage couples to adopt children where the orphaned children and prospective parents have created a family based on human values reproduction.

So the message is not to impose on people to stop having kids, but its more to control population growth in a sensible manner for better today and tomorrow.

We can bring down a lot of issues to a controllable levels and we will see a healthy parity among the rich and poor. This world will be a better place to live in for the ones who have already entered the planet.

Life is not worth living worry every moment on issues that result out of our improper and unsuccessful population control measures. Lets address this together with a sane thought.

Hello Archana,

I agree mostly agree with you when you speak so passionately about social situations which may be hazardous for a wonderful future. I also agree to some extent when you say we need to take measures to reduce the head-count in our nation. When i read the topic "Why do we breed when we cant handle it?" and when i try to summarize the writing, what strikes me vividly is that you have laid importance to the economical stability of a person which is prioritized before he could think of having kids. I agree with that. But, dont you think a person who would be categorized as a below poverty line guy too would have dreamt of having kids (irrespetive of the kind of life he would be able to offer it). And IndiaN army is rated 3rd best in this world only for its sheer strength (head count). I know there are umpteen number of reasons to reduce population in today's age, but on the hind sight dont you think probably there are a hand full good reasons to think differently?

Very well written, somewhere i feel its the responsibility of all us to take the initiative and spread this message across...Still ppl in Rural area lives with the impression, more the number of children's..more earning hands in family!!

If we analyze deeply, root cause of all the crimes/problems is same, (poverty)with ppl r struggling for basic needs of life, they started going for wrong means to achieve their needs.

Nicely thought, but being an old fashion guy that I am (giggle) I
would like to add a thought here that we should not control the laws
of mankind. One great man once said that if we manage our resources
with a mind for the future then this land will serve us for
generations. The land also has the ability to make corrections to
maintain balance in ecology so there is no need for corrections from
Mankind. If you notice the Canadian Population, it is very low; they
too face problems such as Unemployment, Infrastructure planning etc.
What I would like to highlight here is that Population is just one
facet to the problem and not the problem. Looking at it holistically I
feel that Population is not at all a problem. Let me give you reasons
to validate my statement. Sticking to the topic of discussion, the
first thing I recalled was the law demonstrated by Einstein that
"Power of Duplication" will never fail, it is as important as any
other thing on earth. This world does not just belong to ones who can
afford, but it should and will give a chance to the ones who cannot. I
always believe that we should not change but they (the poor) should be
given a chance. I know such topics are always debatable but we should
let the powers of the land prevail. People have resorted to wrong
doings because we have not provided them better infrastructure, the
reason behind lack of infrastructure is because of the vote bank
politics played by our Politicians. We are the only race on this world
out there to eradicate our own Human race just because we are Jealous,
over ambitious and have no concern towards what we can offer to our
future generations. The topic of discussion here is to address these
issues and not create further imbalance in our future generations.
There was also another study in Japan where it was proven that the
current generations was finding it difficult to reproduce babies and
that the Japanese government had come up with initiatives to increase
population. The Japanese government felt the stress levels due to
excessive work for the reason for this deficiency.

I would like to end my comment with this quote from a Famous Poet ELIOT. He said
"When you get little,
You want more,
When you get more,
You desire for even more,
But when you loose it you realize "Little was enough!"

Let's all understand this, move forward, take another step and work towards it.

I cannot agree more on the thought that population should be
controlled. Whether it can be forced, No. As a democratic country our
options are limited. we can try the following for a third child (not
being a twin in second)

- make PAN card mandatory for all citizen and endorse the number of
children on that. use it as a Citizen Card. Alternately link Pan card
with the Ration Card. the Family loses all benefits (subsidized
groceries/LPG, Income Tax benefits under Sec 80C etc)
- Reservation benefits withdrawn for the third child

Ajay: You got it wrong. The idea is to control population and not curb people from having children. Its okay to have one or a maximum of two. Look at the state in villages where we see a couple having 8 to 10 kids. It should be a strategic approach.

Helo again,

I could'nt agree more with Ajay. Very well put bro. This is a topic which can have people queing up to speak FOR it but very few points (valid ones) that are against it. I strongly agree with Ajay when he points out the bigger problems engulfing us and excess population may just be an attribute to it but not the core problem by itself.

As a society interested in forming rules which help the well-being and sustainability of the society - we need agree that people should have freedom subjected to certain broad guidelines. I agree with Sahil that some of the poor consider the kids to be sources of income. If a business man multiplies his cattle because more cows would bring more revenues to him, wont you appreciate him? Let me think of the basic problems you see in applying the same logic to humans
1 - The family is not able to provide for the children for food, shelter and education. I agree that the child is the weakest human being and his/her rights should be protected by the society, may be one of the reasons why abortion is banned after 20 weeks of pregnancy. As a society we have the responsibility of ensuring that all of us humans are treated fairly including the new-borns. I see it more as an enforcement problem. Sure Archana has mentioned the role of Governance here. I have just gone a little speicific as to what I feel the 'role' should be.
2 - Care, concern, love, affection and quality of life - who are we to decide what quantum of all these a family should provide to their kids as long as the basic rights are respected. If you say, a child not loved as a kid might turn into a psycopath and turn into a threat to the society, I would say the case is possible even if there is a single child. Ensuring equality is as much a responsibility of the soceity. Yeah we are a developing country we don't have funds for all that. Here the problem is that we as a nation are poor. Is it only because of the population or because we are not failing to improve the overall wellbeing at the same pace as the population. This is not a chicken and egg situation, I believe. We as a society collectively are nt able to meet the expectations of the stakeholders and we are just throwing the blame on to the people, especially the poor that its their mistake. Lets accept the fact that most of the times we let the market forces decide what is appropriate price / expenditure than the equality, love for the fellow humanbeings and genuine care for well-being of everybody.

I agree that there is a finite percentage of people who get sentimental at the thought of aborting an unwanted pregnancy or some smaller set of superstitious - education probably will help there. Had the society done its bit as in the points 1 and 2 above will they need to be 'educated' NOW...

If there is a way to do it make everybody love their families to start with. Brings me back to the basic question what is love? ...........
